5 Ways to Upgrade Your Skincare Routine this Winter

We're a few months into the winter season, and our skin is letting us know it too. If you haven't found a winter skincare routine that works for you yet, here are a few tips to guide you in the right direction!

      1. Moisturizer is your new best friend (though it already should be): We've all been told plenty of times how important moisturizer is, but have you been told how important it is to choose the right one for you? There are many different types of moisturizers, so you need to find the one that is tailored to your skin type.  Normal/Combination Skin? Choose a medium-weight moisturizer (We recommend Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream). Oily Skin? Make sure you choose a lightweight moisturizer to ensure that you don't over-hydrate which will increase the amount of oil on your skin (We recommend Dermalogica Clearing Mattifier). Dry Skin? Avoid any moisturizers with drying ingredients, focus on a heavier-weight moisturizer (Try Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance). Pro Tip: Less is more. Use a toner just before you apply your moisturizer to make the most out of a small amount. It allows you to use less product and in turn your moisturizer will last longer!
      2. SPF - the gift that doesn't stop giving: You may have already put your SPF away for the winter, thinking that the sun is no longer capable of damage. Well it's time to pull it back out and put it to good use. SPF is still an extremely important part of your skincare routine in winter. The cold doesn't change the suns effect on your skin and you still need to stay protected from UV rays. This helps prevent your skin from prematurely aging, developing dark spots, and other negative effects caused by sun exposure. You can either purchase a moisturizer that already includes SPF (Dermalogica Dynamic Skin SPF 30) or you can use an SPF booster and add it to the moisturizer of your choice.
      3. Avoid going outside with Wet or Damp skin: You've most likely already been warned not to go outside with wet hair. Did you know that having wet/damp skin can have equally damaging effects? The cold air on damp skin will cause it to dry out more frequently and a lot faster. Make sure your skin is fully dry and moisturized before heading out into the cold to prevent excessive drying and cracking.
      4. Lip balm... That actually works: When your skin begins to dry out, chances are the first thing you'll notice is chapped lips. You may be tempted to slap on the drugstore-brand chapstick thats been sitting at the bottom of your purse for months, however, many of these brands actually include drying ingredients and are doing more arm than good. Instead look for something higher-grade that includes ingredients such as Shea/Cocoa Butter & Tocopherol (Vitamin E). Try to avoid ones with Synthetic Dyes, Hyaluronic Acid, and Parabens. Next time, try Dermalogica's Lip Renewal Complex and notice the difference for yourself!
      5. The Golden Rule - STAY HYDRATED: The best thing you can do for your skin and overall health this winter is to get plenty of hydration. Make sure you are drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. If you're finding it hard to consume this much water, try swapping out a few glasses with a glass of herbal tea instead!

6 Ways to Weather-Proof your Hair this Holiday Season

We all know the feeling of our hair slowly drying out as seasons change and snow sets in. We wake up one morning noticing that the texture of our hair has started to slightly resemble that of the Grinch's. As festive as it may be to resemble the Christmas icon, it's not exactly the look we're going for. Here are 6 ways you can weather-proof your hair this holiday season:

  1. Hair Masks: Add some moisture to your shower routine by swapping out your conditioner with a hair masque. Regularly using hair masques will help replenish and seal in moisture, as well as add smoothness & shine. Make sure you wash out any buildup with a clarifying shampoo before applying the masque. Leave it in for 10-15 minutes (as per the instructions on the label) and then thoroughly rinse out your hair. We recommend using one of these hair masques: Caviar Moisture Replenishing Masque ($49) or BC Moisture Kick Treatment ($25). Pro Tip: Use a wet brush to comb the masque through your hair for best results.
  2. Silk & Satin: Fabrics such as cotton, wool and other coarse materials found in toques and pillowcases can cause damage to your hair. Try Lining your toques with a softer, gentler fabric like silk or satin to avoid extra breakage and split ends. You can also find pillowcases made with those materials to avoid your hair breaking while you sleep.
  3. Hair Cuts: We highly recommend booking in a haircut or micro-trim regularly throughout winter. Hair cuts and micro-trims remove split ends caused by the hair drying out, which allows your hair to retain as much moisture as possible in the future. Bonus: You can add a nourishing hair treatment to your Haircut for $15! (Not available with micro-trims)
  4. No Heat Styling: Another great way to prevent damaged hair this winter is to avoid using heat styling as much as possible. Instead, try putting your hair in a braid while it drys overnight for some curl, or invest in some no-heat styling products! If you aren't ready to put down the curling iron just yet, we suggest using a heat protecting spray to help avoid heat damage.
  5. Hair Oils: Hair oils are the perfect product to add to your daily routine this winter! Hair oils combat dry and brittle hair by smoothing own the shaft and adding a subtle shine to make your hair look smooth & silky. Apply starting at the ends of your hair and working your way up to your roots. This allows the majority of oil to be absorbed where your hair needs it the most.
  6. Wash Your Hair Less: The less you wash your hair, the better. Shampoos are made to remove dirt and debris, however, they also remove your hairs natural oils. Those oils are what nourish your hair throughout the day, so washing it too often can lead to dry, brittle hair. Try applying a dry shampoo for the in-between wash days, and use a clarifying shampoo every other wash to remove any product build-up. We recommend using OSIS Refresh Dust ($26.50) and BC Deep Cleansing Shampoo ($40). Less washing = Healthier, happier hair!

Let's face it, no one wants to run their fingers through rough, dry (grinch-inspired) hair all season. Winter can be harsh on your hair, but working at the steps above will help your hair stay looking soft and touchable all season. Benefits of Micro Trimming

If you haven't already heard of the newest trend in haircuts, this may be the perfect thing for you! Check out some of the amazing benefits of getting a Micro Trim and see if it's just what your hair has been needing.

  1. Aids in Hair Growth - Ever heard of getting rid of toxic traits? Time to let go of toxic split ends. Micro Trims typically don't take off more than 1/2" off of the ends so you don't have to worry about losing all of your length in the process of keeping your hair happy & healthy. The longer you hold on to your split ends, the further up the hair shaft they'll split and end up breaking off even shorter.
  2. Healthier Looking Hair - Getting regular Micro Trims is the perfect way to keep your hair looking fresh in-between your regular haircuts by using the dusting technique to remove hair breakage throughout the mid-shaft of your hair and cleaning up the ends.
  3. Quick Stop - Don't have the time for a full haircut but desperately in need of some maintenance? This appointment doesn't include a wash or style so you'll be in and out in around 30 minutes! We just ask that you arrive with clean, dry hair so we can deliver you the best results.

Ready to let go of your split ends and breakage? Book online today!
